Total beginner skateboarding – FAQ

Most kids can begin as early as 2 years old if they can balance and follow instructions. Join our Micro groms Lessons

We group beginners by age and confidence level so they're not mixed with advanced skaters. The key is starting in a controlled, structured environment — not just dropping them into a public skatepark.

For most beginners:

  • Ages 5–7 → 7.25"–8.0" deck
  • Ages 8–12 → 7.5"–8.125" deck
  • Teens → 8.0" + deck
  • Adults → 8.5" + deck

Important: Avoid department store boards. They're heavy, hard to turn, and make learning frustrating.

Yes — especially in the early stages.

We strongly recommend:
• Helmet
• Wrist guards
• Knee pads
• Elbow pads

Pads build confidence. When kids aren't afraid to fall, they progress faster.

Like any sport — football, baseball, gymnastics — there is risk.

The difference is structure. In public skateparks, kids mix with advanced skaters and no coaching. That's where most issues happen.

No.

Our beginner program teaches:
• How to stand on the board
• How to push correctly
• How to stop safely
• How to fall properly

We assume zero experience.

• Flat-soled shoes (Vans-style are ideal)
• Comfortable athletic clothing
• No sandals
• Hair tied back if long

Skate-specific shoes help with grip and board control, but they don't need anything expensive to begin.

Most beginners can:
• Ride confidently within 1–3 sessions
• Drop in on small ramps within a few weeks
• Learn their first tricks (like a shove-it) within 4–8 weeks

Progress depends on consistency, coaching, and confidence.

Completely normal.

Skateboarding builds confidence because:
• It teaches controlled risk
• It teaches falling and getting back up
• It teaches patience

We never force tricks. We build skill layers so kids feel safe before progressing.

Absolutely.

Skateboarding develops balance, coordination, lower body strength, mobility, and mental resilience.

Unlike many traditional sports, it is also individual progression-based, creative, and Olympic pathway recognized.

Most kids practice. We train.

LVLUP follows structured progression systems:
• Skill breakdown
• Coach feedback
• Repetition cycles
• Safety progression

We don't just supervise skating — we develop athletes and confident kids.
